Funding Secured for Breakthrough Project Tackling End-of-Life Composite Waste

Under the transformative technologies banner and with support from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, Structural Adhesives conducted research to develop a groundbreaking epoxy resin designed for recyclability and exceptional performance in composite materials. There is a significant demand from industry for sustainable composite materials that retain high performance while being recyclable at the end of their life. Structural Adhesives are tackling this challenge by developing an epoxy resin for use in composites that not only excels in mechanical performance but also efficiently degrades at end-of-life without significantly compromising the fibres.

The epoxy resin was used to manufacture a carbon composite panel, whose mechanical and thermal properties were rigorously tested by National Composites Centre (NCC) and Loughborough University, both of which have strong relationships with Structural Adhesives. The carbon fibre panel, produced using resin formulated by Structural Adhesives, demonstrated similar behaviour to standard composites, while offering enhanced recyclability. Additionally, the recovered carbon fibre from the recycling process was thoroughly examined, and was of excellent quality, showing no significant differences in dimensions or mechanical properties compared to virgin fibres.
